This session is so close to my heart, and I thank my beautiful aunt Kristy for letting me share these photos and her story.
Breast Cancer, you hear about it all the time. You hear about the toll it can take on the person diagnosed, on their family. But you never actually think it will affect you or loved ones. The reality is this cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, the second leading cause of death among women. One out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and the abnormal breast cancer gene can even be passed on through blood relatives. My mother, my grandmother, my great aunts, and great cousins are all breast cancer survivors.
In my family it is suggested that we undergo genetic testing for the abnormal cancer gene, which is what my aunt did this year and what I will do when I turn 25. Kristy's test results came out with an 87% chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. Her doctor recommended she get a double mastectomy to prevent breast cancer in the future and thats exactly what she did. She asked me to photograph her and I agreed without hesitation. Two surgeries and a new perspective later, my aunt came to visit me to have her session.
Kristy is such a beautiful woman inside and out. The scars she carries only add to that fact. ( I believe the same of all my family members that have had to face this disease) I wanted to show her how I view her, how everyone views her. Beautiful.
